Water Damage Cleanup
Water damage can cause significant damage to a house and its belongings. Acting promptly can help mitigate the damage and prevent further complications.
Stay Safe
Before entering a water-damaged area, check for electrical hazards. Turn off the main water supply and electricity to prevent electrocution. If you detect any electrical hazards, leave the area immediately and call an electrician.
Remove Excess Water
Use towels, a mop, or a wet/dry vacuum to remove standing water. Open windows and doors to ventilate the area and promote drying.
Identify and Repair the Source
Locate the source of the water leak and take steps to repair it. If you cannot identify the source, contact a plumber.
Salvage Belongings
Remove wet items from the affected area and place them in a dry location. Dry salvageable items thoroughly and discard those that are damaged beyond repair.
What Not to Do After Water Damage
- Don’t use a home vacuum to remove water unless it is specifically designed for wet/dry cleanup.
- Don’t turn on fans or heaters to dry the area without first removing excess water.
- Don’t attempt to repair electrical appliances that have been exposed to water.
- Don’t delay seeking professional help if the damage is extensive.
